Anand Mishra, a distinguished IPS officer from the Assam-Meghalaya cadre, has recently hogged headlines with his decision to resign from his prestigious post in pursuit of a life dedicated to social service and personal freedom. Mishra, who secured an All India Rank (AIR) of 225 in the UPSC CSE 2010, entered the Indian Police Service, earning recognition throughout his career for his commitment to maintaining law and order.
Hailing from Bihar, Mishra completed his schooling and college education in Kolkata before embarking on his civil service journey. Initially serving in the West Bengal Civil Service from 2005 to 2010, Mishra’s determination led him to successfully clear the UPSC CSE 2010 exam, paving the way for his entry into the Indian Police Service.
Throughout his term, Mishra held the position of Superintendent of Police (SP) in the Lakhimpur district of Assam. His contributions earned him the moniker Assam’s Singham on social media platforms, where he boasts a significant following of 326,000 on Instagram. Afterwards, Mishra was tasked with serving in Manipur to aid a Special Investigation Team (SIT) that was investigating incidents of violence in the region.
Mishra, in his letter of resignation to the Chief Secretary of the Government of Assam, stated that he wishes to explore personal and social aspirations beyond the scope of his IPS responsibilities. He aims to lead a life of freedom and independence. He stated, “The uniform is my first and last love. I devoted these 12 years to the service of people. But the thing is that there are certain sets of conduct rules within which you have to work when you stay in such a job. My dream is to work for the betterment of the people of my home state of Bihar, which I can do only by staying outside the service.”
There is a lot of talk about Mishra’s future political aspirations after he made a decision that has sparked speculation. According to rumours, he may join the BJP and run for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. However, despite this speculation, Mishra’s primary goal is to use his expertise in counter-insurgency and anti-mafia operations to make a meaningful contribution to society through alternative avenues. When questioned about his future plans, Mishra stated that he wants to focus on the developmental needs of his hometown in Bihar. He emphasised that the residents of the village desire him to work towards improving their lives.
In a statement to The Times of India, Mishra urged others not to take him as an example and emphasised the importance of following one’s passion.
