American gymnast Simone Biles has come to the defence of her husband Jonathan Owens, who received severe backlash for wearing one of her Olympic gold medals. Simone has enjoyed a dream campaign in Paris. She finished atop the podium in three events to become the most decorated American gymnast in the history of the Summer Olympics. Simone currently has a total of 10 Olympic medals and seven of them are gold. Following her victory with the US women’s gymnastics team in the all-around event in Paris, Jonathan dropped an Instagram post. The Chicago Bears football player was captured posing with his wife while wearing an Olympic gold medal around his neck.
“Witnessing history every time you step on the mat. Congrats baby on becoming the most decorated American gymnast in Olympic history!! Just wow!! 8 of them!! So thankful I was there to see it,” Jonathan Owens wrote in the caption.
Responding to her appreciatory remarks, Simone Biles commented, “Means the world you’re here. My whole heart. I love you.” The post, however, did not go down well with many people, who slammed Jonathan Owens for wearing the Olympic medal as it was not won by him.
One of them asked, “Why are you holding the medal?” Another person said, “Don’t steal her thunder. She earned that medal herself.” “Put that back around her neck sir,” wrote a user.
According to a report by the Independent, Simone Biles shared her thoughts about those critics on TikTok. “The crazy thing is, I put my medal on every single one of my family members and took pictures. So don’t ever make assumptions. Like y’all are so f****** miserable. Leave us alone,” the 27-year-old gymnast wrote.
Last year, Jonathan Owens courted controversies for claiming that he didn’t know Simone Biles when the couple first met on a dating service, Raya, in 2020. Though the talented gymnast had already competed at the Rio Olympics by that time, Jonathan reportedly said, “I just hadn’t heard of her, and when I told her that, that’s one of the things she liked.”
Simone Biles spoke about the topic during a conversation with Alex Cooper on the ‘Call Her Daddy’ podcast. She said, “I thought it was hilarious at first, and then they hurt my feelings. And then one night, I broke down and I’m like: ‘Why are you guys talking about my husband like this? Like, you don’t know him. You don’t know who he is. And if anybody’s met him, they know he’s the sweetest guy and will do anything for anybody,’” as quoted by NDTV.
Jonathan Owens is currently gearing up for the next NFL season with the Chicago Bears. Taking out time from his own training, the 29-year-old jetted off to Paris to support his wife during her Olympics campaign.
