‘Pak Bean’ or say, Pakistan’s ‘fake’ Mr. Bean made a comeback in the stands during the Pakistan Super League (PSL) final match between Islamabad United and Multan Sultans in Karachi on March 18. As the innings reached the midway point and players switched ends between overs, the broadcast cameras captured Pakistan comedian Asif Muhammad dressed in full Mr. Bean attire, complete with the OG, Rowan Atkinson’s iconic facial expressions and brown coat, snapping selfies with enthusiastic onlookers.
“What’s mr bean doing there,” exclaimed one user on ‘X’, sparking a flurry of photos and videos of Pak Bean flooding social media. Another user fondly recalled the origins of Pak Bean, harking back to the 2022 ICC T20 World Cup clash between Pakistan and Zimbabwe when the character first gained notoriety.

In response, a disgruntled Twitter user from Zimbabwe aired grievances over Pakistan’s alleged deception, accusing them of sending a “fake” Mr. Bean to their country. The incident, involving the imposter Pak Bean allegedly swindling attendees at a local event in Harare, left a bitter taste in Zimbabweans’ mouths. In his words, “As Zimbabweans we wont forgive you…you once gave us that Fraud Pak Bean instead of Mr Bean Rowan ..we will settle the matter tommorow just pray the rains will save you…#ZIMVSPAK (sic).”

As tensions mounted online, Zimbabwe pulled off a nail-biting victory against Pakistan in a match that would later be immortalised in the annals of cricketing history. Even the Presidents of both nations waded into the fray, with Zimbabwe’s President calling for the “real Mr. Bean” to be sent next time. “What a win for Zimbabwe! Congratulations to the Chevrons. Next time, send the real Mr Bean… #PakvsZim (sic),” wrote Zimbabwe President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa.
