A grave incident at Ascension Sacred Heart Emerald Coast Hospital in Florida has raised serious concerns after a surgery ended in tragedy. On August 19, William ‘Bill’ Bryan and his wife Beverly were staying at their rental property when Bill began experiencing pain on his left side of the body. They decided to seek medical attention at the hospital, where he was treated by Dr. Thomas Shaknovsky. Although the Bryans had initial reservations about the surgery, they were persuaded by the medical team that it was crucial to prevent serious complications. However, according to the family’s lawyer, Dr. Shaknovsky mistakenly removed Bill’s liver instead of his spleen, leading to severe blood loss and Bill’s subsequent death.
According to the law firm, “On August 21, 2024, Dr Shaknovsky proceeded with a hand-assisted laparoscopic splenectomy procedure. During this operation, Dr Shaknovsky removed Mr Bryan’s liver and, in so doing, transected the major vasculature supplying the liver, causing immediate and catastrophic blood loss resulting in death. The surgeon proceeded with labelling the removed liver specimen as a “spleen,” and it wasn’t until following the death that it was identified that the organ removed was actually Mr Bryan’s liver, as opposed to the spleen.”
“The surgeon told Mrs Bryan after the procedure that the “spleen” was so diseased that it was four times bigger than usual and had migrated to the other side of Mr Bryan’s body. Typical human anatomy dictates that the liver naturally exists on the opposite side of the abdominal cavity, and it is several times larger than the spleen. The family was informed that Mr Bryan’s spleen, the root of his original symptom profile upon presentation to the hospital, was still in his body and appeared with a small cyst on its surface,” they added.
In a surprising turn of events, it has come to light that Dr. Thomas Shaknovsky had previously made a similar mistake in 2023. In that case, he mistakenly removed part of a patient’s pancreas instead of an adrenal gland. That incident was settled quietly, but Dr. Shaknovsky continued his surgical duties at Ascension Sacred Heart Emerald Coast Hospital.
Meanwhile, Beverly is demanding that Shaknovsky should no longer work with patients. She believes that her husband’s death was caused by mistakes made by Shaknovsky during surgery. According to her, no one else should suffer or die because of his errors. She feels that the hospital should have been aware of his previous serious errors and acted accordingly to prevent further tragedies.
As of now, it is not clear if he still has the right to perform surgeries at this hospital or others nearby.
