Delhi Man Loses Rs 16,000 in Dating App Scam: 'Paid for Food, Drinks I Didn't Have'
Dating App Scam: A man met a woman on a dating app, and they planned a date at Bagheera Cafe in Delhi's Hudson Lane, where he lost Rs 16,000 in a scam.

It’s a match on a dating app, then they go on a dinner date and the man ends up paying a colossal bill – this has become a modus operandi in dating app scams. Women, in most cases, lure their targets with the promise of a romantic connection, only to leave them with hefty bills for food and drinks they barely consume. A man in Delhi recently fell victim to this scam and lost Rs 16,000.

In a post on Reddit, the victim shared his ordeal. “On a dating app, I matched with a girl. She insisted on meeting at a public place and then sent Hudson Lane location outside Bagheera cafe,” he recounted.

They met outside the cafe and then went inside. “As soon as I walked in, I had a bad feeling,” the man noted.

The man went on to describe the short horror story he went through. “The waiter gave us the menu and suddenly this girl asked to order the king-size hookah, which I refused because I do not smoke and do not want to be at that place,” he went on to say.

“Five minutes later, she excused herself to use the restroom – which, as it turned out, was the fire escape area—and the waiter brought her a hookah, vodka shots, and a chicken starter as soon as she returned,” he claimed.

It didn’t end here. The woman smoked the hookah and the vodka shots she had were actually “water shots”. Soon after, she pretended to receive phone calls from home and quickly left the restaurant.

“She pretended to be getting calls from home and said she had a headache – all within less than ten minutes and said she needed to leave… But before I could do anything, she was already gone,” the man added.

Then, the real scam began. “The waiter handed me a bill for Rs 17,170. When I asked for a discount, he said they only give 10 per cent off on food items and forced me to pay Rs 16,000. When I gave them my card, they said there would be an additional 4 per cent charge, which is how they got me into pay with cash.”

The man, who was caught in the dating app scam, returned to the same location with his friend and spotted the same girl with another man. “When we attempted to enter the cafe, security stopped us and refused to let us in because they knew the girl was defrauding other patrons.”

“I lost Rs 16,000, and don’t know how to get my money back.” he further said.

As per the bill dated September 24 that the victim shared, the total amounted to Rs 17,170 for a king-size hookah, a LIIT, a Red Bull, and a chicken lollipop.
