After AIB, stand-up comedian Abish Mathew too has joined the forces against Facebook's controversial Free Basics service and in his latest video 'Save The Internet' he explains why the Facebook-backed service is actually against the idea of free and equal Internet for everyone.
Free Basics, earlier called Internet.org, offers free access to a set of websites and services with the objective of introducing Internet to the people. However, net neutrality advocates have been sternly opposing the idea that aims to basically provide free access to only partner websites or publishers and charge for others.
Facebook has been widely publicising Free Basics through full page newspaper ads, hoardings, and also prompting users of its platform to support the service as "a first step to connecting one billion Indians to the opportunities online - and achieving digital equality in India. But without your support, it could be banned in a matter of few weeks', and how -like their friends- they should also click on the button to send an email to TRAI in support of the controversial service.
Mathew takes a dig at the so-called free Internet idea by Facebook by comparing it to a stereotypical mother who allows her son to marry any girl - that his mother chooses for him. Towards the end of the video, he urges users to make an informed decision and send an email in support of net neutrality by visiting savetheinternet.in. The deadline to send the emails is December 30.
