New Delhi: With technology getting more and more customized to suit the consumer needs, location software plays a crucial role in delivering tailored apps and features of many products. Keeping in tune with that, Apple has acquired a GPS startup called Coherent Navigation.
The tech giant did not reveal the details of the deal, but the acquisition is expected to further boost Apple’s location technology and services.
A report in The New York Times notes that the Bay Area global positioning company was founded in 2008 and was a small firm that focused on creating commercial navigation services based on partnerships with companies like Boeing and satellite network operator Iridium.
The GPS startup has a profile that boasts of having worked on high-precision navigation systems, which are far stronger than the present-day consumer-grader global positioning systems. It has further worked on autonomous navigation and robotics projects, as well as projects for the Defense Department.
This is the latest in Apple’s series of location technology service acquisitions over the past six years. Earlier deals included those with Placebase, a small mapping service; Locationary; and Hopstop. These have been part of Apple’s broader strategy to take on the popular Google Maps service.
