Jalandhar: Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi on Monday accused the Akali Dal-led government in Punjab for encouraging illegal trade of drugs.
Rahul, who is demonstrating at Jalandhar against the drug menace, promised to end drugs culture if the Congress is voted to power in assembly elections scheduled to be held in 2017.
The only solution to the drug menace is to keep the youth away from the Akalis. "The state government is promoting drug culture among the youths," he added.
While hitting out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi he said, "Modi ji committed to ensure ease of doing business in India. But it is unfortunate that only business which is easy to do in Punjab is that of drugs."
On the context of controversy over movie 'Udta Punjab', he said, "It is the Akali Dal and the BJP who are responsible for the trouble. They want to create hurdles before its release because they don't want to admit the truth that drug became a menace in Punjab."
"The truth is Punjab's future has been destroyed," he added.
Meanwhile, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) questioned Rahul's stand on drugs issue in Punjab.
AAP Leader Sanjay Singh said, "Congress has always overlooked the drugs menace. It is unfortunate that Congress leader Pratap Singh Bajwa nominated to Rajya Sabha despite his drugs link."
