New Delhi: Hitting back at the BJP, the Congress on Frriday dismissed as "political bankruptcy" its demand for Home Minister P Chidambaram's resignation on the 2G issue and advised the Opposition party to set its house in order.
"They should set their own house in order. They are diverting attention from their internal problems... It shows the political bankruptcy of the party," party spokesperson Renuka Chowdhury told reporters.
Signalling that 'all is well' in the government following the statement of Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee on the 2G issue in the presence of Chidambaram, she said that the two leaders are "senior and mature" ministers.
"I don't think you should read anything more into the situation ...There is no war between the two ministers. That is a myth," she said, adding that the matter was with the JPC and the courts and "why we should rewind and replay all the time".
Asked about reports that Congress President Sonia Gandhi cracked the whip to bring about truce between Mukherjee and Chidambaram, she shot back, "They are responsible leaders. They are not children. I don't think anyone needs to crack...We should not see shadow where there is none."
Her reaction came close on the heels of the BJP keeping up the attack on the home minister despite patching up of differences with the finance minister.
BJP spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad said that there can't be different laws for A Raja and Chidambaram and demanded that the home minister also go to jail for his role in the 2G scam.
CPI-M General Secretary Prakash Karat also demanded the resignation of Chidambaram, saying there was "mounting
evidence" about his "direct role and involvement" in the 2G spectrum allocation scandal.
