Resume debate on Lokpal: Jaitley in Rajya Sabha
Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley said the government cannot postpone the Lokpal debate indefinitely.

New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) raised the Lokpal Bill issue in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday demanding that the debate on the bill be resumed.

"The debate must continue on the Lokpal Bill in the House according to the rules," Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley said.

He also said that the government cannot postpone the debate indefinitely. "The government cannot say that it will indefinitely postpone the debate on Lokpal Bill," Jaitley said.

Jaitley also questioned the government's intention on getting the Lokpal Bill passed.

Reacting to this, the government clarified its stand and said it was committed to bring a strong Lokpal Bill. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal said, "There is a need of an urgent meeting with the Opposition and taking up the matter."

He also said that the government was ready to resume the debate on the bill in the Budget session.

BJP is in no mood to give up the contentious Lokpal issue which had led to adjournment of the Upper House on the night of December 29 without passing the Bill.

The Bill was passed in the Lok Sabha on the December 27, 2011 when the winter session was extended by three days. But the Bill couldn't be passed in the Rajya Sabha and both the government and the Opposition accused each other of carrying out 'choreographed chaos' to scuttle the legislation.
