New Delhi: The newly appointed BJP national president Amit Shah has already reconstituted the office bearers of the party. It was met with no resistance or sulking. His next big challenge is the reconstitution of BJP's top decision making body- the Parliamentary Board.
The BJP constitution stipulates that the national executive shall appoint a parliamentary board consisting of the party president and ten members one of whom will be the leader of the party in parliament with party president as chairman. One of the general secretaries shall be appointed as the secretary of the parliamentary board.
Board under Rajnath Singh as President had comprised of:
Rajnath Singh: President
AB Vajpayee
LK Advani
Narendra Modi
Arun Jaitley
Sushma Swaraj
Nitin Gadkari
Venkaih Naidu
Thawar Chandra Gehlot
Murli Manohar Joshi
Ananth Kumar: Secretary
The general secretary organisation in this case was Ram Lal who is also invited for the board meetings.
The parliamentary board is the topmost decision making body of the BJP. To expand or contract the parliamentary board, one has to amend the party constitution. Conventionally, all former national presidents are included in the parliamentary board. In the current board five have served as presidents in the past.
Delay in Restructuring of Parliamentary Board: The Dilemma
According to insiders the consultations going on within the BJP on the structure of the new Paliamentary Board. If the leaders aged above 75 are not included in the board, then some top leaders including LAB Vajpayee, LK Advani and Dr MM Joshi will have to be dropped. The RSS' dilemma is the exclusion of the patriarch may send a wrong signal. Another issue is whether Union minister Ananth Kumar who ceases to be general secretary in the new dispensation continues as member of the board. No sitting chief minister except Narendra Modi has in the past been made a member of the board.
