Punjab minister Kanwaljit Singh dies in accident
Punjab govt declares state funeral for minister, 3-days state mourning.

Chandigarh: The Punjab Government announced a three-day state mourning in honour of Cooperation Minister Kanwaljit Singh, who was killed in a road accident on Sunday.

The government decided for a state funeral, but the time and place are yet to be finalised, Chief Minister's Media Advisor H S Bains said.

All the state government offices would remain closed tomorrow as a mark of respect to the departed minister and the national flag would fly at half mast, Bains added.

Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and his deputy Sukhbir Singh Badal campaigning in Bhatinda parliamentary constituency have returned to the capital.

The 67-year-old leader, also the general secretary of the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal, died at PGIMER hospital on Sunday night where he was admitted to after a road accident in Kharar near Chandigarh.

Kanwaljit, who represented Banur Assembly seat and was the Minister for Cooperation, was returning here from Ludhiana when his private car was first hit by a truck near the T-point in Kharar on Ropar road in Khanpur village.

"The car was hit by truck and it skidded. A second truck which was following the first one also crashed into the car which overturned," Kharar city's Station House Officer Dalbir Singh said.

As the model code of conduct is in force, Kanwaljit was using a private car and had only one pilot vehicle ahead of his car.

Kanwaljit was sitting on the front seat of the car while his driver Jasbir Singh was driving the vehicle. There was one more person sitting in the car's backseat.

Meanwhile, the Punjab Government has ordered an inquiry into incident.
