Bhubaneswar: Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik Friday received in his mail a threat to his life, official here said Friday.
"The letter which was sent by post was received by the chief minister's office Friday. The name of the sender according to the letter was Maovadi Sangha, Paschim Orissa," Home Secretary T K Mishra told reporters.
"The police are investigating the matter," Mishra said without divulging further details.
"A week ago the Orissa Bhavan in New Delhi had also received a phone call from an unidentified person who threatened the Chief Minister," Mishra said.
"The Orissa government has brought the matter to the notice of the Delhi Police," he said.
The state government has increased security around the residence and office of the chief minister.
"The government will also assess security of all ministers Monday and take adequate measures," he added.
Patnaik said he was not afraid of any threat and did not require additional security.
The threat came weeks after communal violence erupted in the state after the killing of a Hindu community leader August 23.
Swami Laxmananda Saraswati, a central advisory committee member of the Vishwa Hindu Parisad (VHP), and four others were shot dead by unidentified gunmen at his Jalespata Ashram in Kandhamal district.
The police suspect Maoist rebels were behind the killing, but some Hindu groups blamed Christians for the murder and went on the rampage. Christian groups have repeatedly denied the allegation.
Since August 23, the state has witnessed communal violence in which 19 people, mostly in Kandhamal district, have died and thousands have been rendered homeless.
