New Delhi: The General Secretary of the Communist Party of India (CPI) AB Bardhan has fired yet another salvo in the ongoing Left-UPA war of words.
Indicating a toughening of stance by the CPI over the government's interpretation of the Indo-US nuclear deal, Bardhan said that the situation within the UPA government is untenable.
"Honeymoon is over but the marriage might continue," Bardhan said at the CPI's Central Secretariat meeting in New Delhi on Friday.
Though Bardhan indicated that there was no immediate threat to the UPA government, which is support by the Left parties, but he said that there is no love left and the Left-UPA marriage will gradually move towards a divorce.
"Left support can no longer be taken for granted. The governement should understand that their view doesn't reflect the view of the majority," Bardhan warned.
He said the kind of support given by Left parties to the government needs to be redefined adding the Left parties should meet and decide together on support to government.
"There should be merit based support for the government. CPI can no longer be taken for granted by the government," Bardhan said.
He also said that the CPI is for "merit-based" support to government and the situation has become untenable with the nuclear deal being the "climax".
