New Delhi: National Commission for Women Chairperson Mamta Sharma on Tuesday wrote a letter to President Pranab Mukherjee and Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jund demanding action against Delhi Law Minister Somanth Bharti. In the letter, Mamta demanded that Somnath Bharti be asked to immediately resign from his position.
Already under fire following a midnight raid and numerous controversial statements, the demand for Bharti's resignation is growing louder day by day. The Bharatiya Janata Party had protested outside Delhi Secretariat and demanded his resignation a few days ago.
Bharti had tried to conduct a midnight raid at Khirki extension and asked police to arrest Ugandan women whom he accused of being involved in prostitution and drug trafficking.
Even after some Ugandan national identified Bharti and accused him and his supporters for misbehaving with them, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal did not take any action against the minister.
Earlier, the Delhi Commission for Women served summon to the minister for the alleged misbehaviour but the latter did not appear before the commission and instead sent his lawyers. Bharti was, however, seen attending a kite festival while his lawyer had a showdown with the DCW office bearers.
Demanding Bharti's resignation a few days ago, the DCW chief had said, "The SHO cannot summon Bharti as he was being threatened by Aam Aadmi Party supporters."
