Nanavati Commission Report reactions: Who said what
Here's what prominent political voices said about the report.

New Delhi:The Nanavati Commission probing into the Godhra train carnage tabled the first part of the report in the Gujarat Assembly on Thursday. The report says the burning of Sabarmati Express coach on February 27, 2002, was a pre-planned conspiracy, contradicting the findings of an earlier probe by UC Banerjee Committee.

Here's what the prominent voices of Indian politics said about the report:

"I resepect the court order. This report will not have a legal impact, but will have socio-political impact." — Jan Sangharsh Morcha advocate, Mukul Sinha

"BJP demands immediate ban on Indian Mujahideen. The Nanavati Commission's report has finally brought out the truth that the Godhra incident was an attack from outside. This report is based on exhaustive investigations." — BJP Spokesperson, Prakash Javadekar

"The Banerjee Committee's report was ill conceived and politically motivated. The Nanavati report has come out with the truth, that Godhra attack was a pre-planned attack. The matter will further proceed as per the Nanavati commission." — BJP Spokesperson, Prakash Javadekar added.

"It will not have any legal implications but the report will be used politically. I don't see why only Part 1 report has been tabled." — Jan Sangharsh Morcha advocate, Mukul Sinha

"Modi is a representative of communal virus." — Union Railways Minister, Lalu Pasad

"There is an unholy haste to pre-emptively set up a committee within the state. This is the first phase of findings, so they are incomplete in a sense. There is a conflict with detailed findings of the principal department involved, the Railway Ministry. And last but not the least, Supreme Court has shifted the entire trial out of Gujarat. This is rarely done and is a complete vote of no confidence in the impartitality of the judicial system of Gujarat." — Congress Spokesperson, Abhishek Manu Singhvi

"The Nanavati Commission report states that incident was pre-planned in cold blood. Now fingers cannot be pointed at the Chief Minister and the Council of Ministers. They cannot be accused of dereliction of their duties." — Spokersperson for the Gujarat government, Jai Narayan Vyas

I have examined evidence and on the basis of this I have given my reports. I don't need to listen to anybody." — Justice UC Banerjee

But an earlier probe had a very contradictory finding. It was probe by Justice UC Banerjee who was appointed by Railway Minister Lalu Prasad. This is what the probe said:

  • The fire on the Sabarmati Express was accidental and not deliberate.
  • The report had dismissed the theory that the blaze was caused by outsiders.
  • It said the deaths were caused by toxicity and suffocation.
  • It also disputed the claim that all entrances to the coach were locked.
  • It said that there was no intelligence information on when the kar sevaks were coming.
