New Delhi Bharatiya Janata Party prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi's candidature from Varanasi has generated a lot of interest about his possible opponents. The political arithmetic of eastern Uttar Pradesh and western Bihar has changed dramatically with Modi in the fray.
In the 2009 Lok Sabha elections, BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi faced a very tough challenge from strongman Mukhtar Ansari, the Quami Ekta Dal leader. But if there is a strong leader standing against Modi, then Ansari may withdraw from the battle.
Quami Ekta Dal's National Vice President Athar Jamal has hinted about such a possibility. He said that Modi's candidature is an attempt by the BJP to communally polarise the electorate.
He said that Quami Ekta Dal will support any one who is in a position to defeat Modi. When specifically asked about Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal, he said that his party will support the strongest leader against Modi. He added that other parties should also think about supporting the Quami Ekta Dal.
The comments assume significance as in the 2009 elections Ansari has secured 28 per cent votes while Joshi had got 31 per cent votes.
