Mumbai: Refusal to shout 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai' led to the suspension of All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) MLA Waris Yusuf Pathan from Maharahstra Assembly. Pathan was on Wednesday suspended for the remaining period of Budget Session of Maharashtra Assembly for unparliamentry conduct.
The action against Pathan comes just days after AIMIM Lok Sabha MP from Hyderabad Asaduddin Owaisi commented that no one can force him to chant 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai' even by putting a knife to his throat.
Pathan was surrounded by MLA from other parties inside the Assembly soon after he refused to chant 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai'. Several Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLAs tried to coerce Pathan into saying 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai' but the legislator from Byculla refused to do so which led to an uproar.
AIMIM MLA from Aurangabad Central Sayed Imtiaz Jalil defended his party colleague saying they don't want any slogan to show their nationalism.
"We will not follow what BJP wants us to say, we will not get pressured. Some of the BJP leaders wanted me to chant Bharat Mata Ki Jai in the Assembly. If you want to suspend us, then suspend. We have some rights. Whatever is there in the Constitution we will follow only that," he said.
