New Delhi: Maharashtra wing of the Congress is reportedly in favour of fighting the Assembly elections due in the state later in the year alone.
Sources have told CNN-IBN that All India Congress Council General Secretary Digvijay Singh has submitted a report on Maharashtra Assembly elections to Defence Minister AK Antony and party workers and senior state leaders are so upbeat about the party's prospects that they want to dump partner Nationalist Congress Party (NCP).
However, Congress President Sonia Gandhi is reportedly not in favour of breaking the alliance with NCP.
In case the alliance remains intact, Congress is likely to demand more seats from the NCP as compared to last time.
Singh had on August 15 said that with the foreign origin issue of Congress President Sonia Gandhi no longer relevant, the NCP should consider merging with the Congress.
But NCP President and Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar had reacted angrily to Singh's statement daring the Congress to go alone in the upcoming Assembly elections in the state.
"I don't know why some leaders talk in such cheap manner. It's okay if some party leaders might discuss it within themselves but it does mean you have to make it so public. These are just discussions. Some leaders like cheap publicity and have these discussions not within the party but outside," Pawar said.
NCP was formed on May 25, 1999, after Pawar along with Purno Sangma and Tariq Anwar broke away from the Congress protesting against Sonia Gandhi's foreign origin and formed the NCP.
