New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress continue to trade barbs in the Maharashtra irrigation scam with members of both the parties releasing letters after letters implicating leaders of the other. Hours after Union Water Resources Minister Pawan Bansal alleged that BJP President Nitin Gadkari had sent him a letter to release funds for the Gosikhurd project, the Opposition party has hit back.
The BJP has now released a letter from the Congress's state President Manikrao Thakare to Bansal seeking funds for the same project. Both Gadkari and Thakare's letters don't name contractors but ask for funds to be released in the interests of farmers.
CNN-IBN had earlier reported how Gadkari's close aide Ajay Sancheti had bent rules to get contracts in the Ghosikurd project. The letter by Thakare says, "Respected Shri Bansal Ji, the Centre has released Rs 3268 crore since January 2009 for the Gosikhurd irrigation prokect which have been utilised. Now due to non-availability of funds and delay, annual work of all components has almost stopped. The pending liability has risen to more than Rs 500 crore. Unless funds are made available immediately, the work cannot go on."
