Ranchi: Taking exception to some party leaders in Jharkhand airing statements against each other in the run up to the Jamshedpur Lok Sabha bypoll, AICC president Sonia Gandhi on Friday directed the PCC to set up a four-member disciplinary committee to identify them and send a report within three weeks to initiate stern action.
"The directive was given to party's in-charge for Jharkhand affairs Shakeel Ahmed. PCC disciplinary committee head KN Jha will head the committee to look into statements and counter-statements made by those Congress leaders from the party's nomination of Banna Gupta for the seat till the bypoll results were announced on July 4," PCC general secretary and spokesman Sailesh Sinha said.
Strict action would be taken against those leaders if found guilty, Sinha said adding the other members of the committee are Brajendra Prasad Singh, Kamar Safder and JP Gupta.
The Congress finished fifth in the bypoll with Babulal Marandi's Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (Prajatantric-JVM-P) candidate Ajay Kumar winning the seat.
The Congress and the JVM-P were pre-poll allies during the 2009 assembly elections, but chose to fight separately in the bypoll.
Some Congress leaders were reportedly not happy with the selection of Gupta, who is one of the 14 Congress MLAs in the state assembly.
