The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has initiated a preliminary enquiry into the purported sting operation against former Uttarakhand chief minister Harish Rawat, after receiving a notification from the Centre.
In the sting operation, Rawat allegedly offered crores to Congress rebels to bring them back into the party fold. The sting operation, among other things, had led to the imposition of President's rule in Uttarakhand.
Umesh Kumar, the man who made the sting, was on Friday examined at the CBI headquarters.
Rawat had also demanded a probe into the issue, doubting the credentials of the man behind the purported sting operation.
"The sting CD being shown on the news channels is fake. The reputation of the man behind it who is associated with a private news channel is not hidden from anyone. His antecedents must be probed," Rawat had said.
Even though he called the video "false", Rawat said if at all it indicates something, it is that the rebel MLAs have aligned with BJP for money.
The video was released by Congress rebels, alleging that Rawat had tried to buy their support. Rebel Congress MLAs Kunwar Pranav Singh and Saket Bahuguna, the son of former Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna, had released the CD at a press conference in Delhi saying it showed that Rawat was resorting to horse trading.
