Nagpur: The Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) in Maharashtra slammed the Congress over Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan's decision to skip Prime Minister Narendra Modi's programme in Nagpur on Thursday.
The BJP said that Congress was staying away as they felt "mocked". Modi is scheduled to perform 'bhumi-pujan' of a Metro project in Nagpur today.
"Congress Chief Ministers could run away from the stage that they are sharing with Modi but they would be unable to run away from his development," BJP leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said.
The Congress on the other hand, stood by Chavan's decision to boycott the event after Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Hooda was jeered by Modi's supporters at a function in Kaithal earlier this week.
Not only Chavan, all Congress Chief Ministers have now decided to boycott functions attended by PM Modi. Supporting Chavan's decision, Congress leader Manish Tewari said, "no one after being ridiculed in that manner, would like to share the dais with Narendra Modi."
Earlier last week, Chavan was hooted down during a public event in Solapur when he shared the stage with the PM. Chavan had to stop speaking during the function as the crowd began to chant Modi's name.
The Congress had alleged conspiracy saying it seemed to be the BJP's trick to embarrass Congress leaders. "The suspicion that Modi has dictator's mentality is now coming true. To the date never a Chief Minister was humiliated in the presence of the Prime Minister at any function," Maharashtra Congress spokesperson Sachin Sawant had said.
"Modi supporters created disturbance and the PM did not utter a word. This is dangerous for the democracy," the Congress spokesperson had said adding that they will not tolerate such incidents in the future.
