BJP Holds the Fort in Bypolls Post-Demonetisation
The jury might still be out on demonetisation, but the BJP seems well on its way to get the popular stamp on the policy move by leading in two Lok Sabha seats and retaining an assembly constituency in bypolls.

New Delhi: The jury might still be out on demonetisation, but it hasn’t hurt BJP’s electoral fortunes with the party winning a Lok Sabha and an Assembly seat and leading it yet another parliamentary seat in bypolls.

According to latest figures, the party has won Shahdol in Madhya Pradesh and was leading in Lakhimpur in Assam, both Lok Sabha constituencies. It also won the Nepanagar assembly seat in MP by 40,600 votes.

Trinamool Congress won Cooch Behar and Tamluk Lok Sabha constituencies and Monteswar assembly seat in West Bengal, while the AIADMK won in Thanjavur assembly seat in Tamil Nadu. It was leading in Aravakurichi and Tiruparakundram.

The only change came in Tripura where the CPI(M) won both Barjala and Khowai assembly seats. Barjala was earlier held by the Congress. For the Congress, the only good news so far came in Puducherry where Chief Minister Narayansamy won the Nellithope assembly seat.

Results for Baithalango (ST) in Assam and Hayuliang (ST) in Arunachal Pradesh were yet to be announced.
