Music composer AR Rahman has broken his silence on the continuing debate over growing intolerance in the country. Speaking at the International Film Festival in Goa, Rahman said that the 'Award Wapsi' protest was poetic and he was happy that the agitation was non-violent.
"India is the land of Mahatma Gandhi who showed the world that revolution can be brought about through non-violence. We must set an example for the world," he said.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has reacted saying that all sides of the narrative must be respected. "Conflicting narratives over Award Wapsi suggest that India is a tolerant nation. Nobody is disputing the message. There will always be a set of people who will disagree," BJP leader Nalin Kohli said.
Meanwhile, the Congress hit out at the BJP saying the Centre is ignoring the issue of intolerance and drawing it into a political fight. "Is it democracy that if anyone is against your opinion, you shoot him down?, Congress leader RPN Singh said.
Bollywood actor Aamir Khan's comments that his wife Kiran Rao suggested leaving India in the face of intolerance, has created a stir. The comments came after Shah Rukh Khan also faced public wrath over his "extreme intolerance" comment. He was termed a "Pakistani agent".
Rahman, known as the 'Mozart of Madras', had also faced religious resistance over his "decision" to compose the music of "Muhammad: The Messenger of God".
Hitting out at the actor, Shiv Sena in its mouthpiece Saamna said that it's ungrateful on Aamir Khan's part to call India intolerant.
Calling him 'Ranchordas' Aamir Khan, one who leaves the fight mid-way, Sena said, "he made a movie like PK criticising Hindu religious figures and released it, yet he believes India is intolerant. Aamir appears like a hero in shows like Satyamev Jayate and then says he wants to leave the country."
It also questioned the actor that if he believes India is not fit to live, which country does he want to move to.
