Mathura: The runup to General Elections 2009 is witnessing many candidates taking potshots at each other. First it was Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and BJP’s prime ministerial candidate launching bitter attack on each other, and now it’s Rashtriya Lok Dal president Ajit Singh who has poked fun at Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati.
Ajit Singh said people of Uttar Pradesh were fed up of Mayawati’s ''goons'' collecting funds from them for celebrations of her every birthday and wondered aloud what would happen if the BSP Supremo decided to tie the knot.
''Arre thak jaoge kanyadan dal dal ke agar kal Behenji ne shaadi karne ki soch li to (you would be tired of shelling out money for her gifts if tomorrow Mayawati decides to tie the knot),'' he took the swipe at an election rally in Mathura on Tuesday.
Ajit Singh was campaigning for his son Jayant Choudhry who is contesting the Lok Sabha elections as the BJP-RLD candidate from Mathura constituency for the first time.
Singh said people in the country were in constant fear of terrorism but people of Uttar Pradesh were scared of terrorism of birthday, referring to the annual grand celebrations of Mayawati's birthday in which she purportedly asks for huge donations from party workers and others.
He also alleged the people of the state may be reeling under abject poverty but their Chief Minister was busy celebrating her birthday and was not bothered about the plight of the farmers.
