Shreyas Iyer Slams Historic Fastest Hundred in World Cup Semifinal Against New Zealand, Records Most Sixes
Shreyas Iyer hit the fastest hundred in ODI World Cup semifinal in just 67 balls etching his name in history books while equaling Ricky Ponting and Adam Gilchrist's tally of most sixes.

Shreyas Iyer etched his name in the record books by slamming the fastest hundred in the 48-year-old history of the World Cup, in a knockout fixture. Glenn Maxwell had earlier smashed a hundred in just 40 balls, but his century came in the league phase. Coming to the World Cup semifinal, Iyer’s century in just 67 balls gave him the fastest hundred in the tournament’s knockouts.

The middle-order batter played a special knock, that too at his home ground at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Iyer couldn’t have picked a more special occasion to notch the piece of history as India played New Zealand, hoping to break their semifinal jinx having been eliminated in the final four in the past two editions of the World Cup.

Thanks to Shreyas Iyer and Virat Kohli’s 50th ODI ton, along with half-centuries from Shubman Gill and KL Rahul, India were able to score 397/4. Iyer also surpassed another major milestone, joining the likes of Ricky Ponting and Adam Gilchrist in an exclusive club.

The Indian equalled Ponting and Gilchrist’s tally of most sixes in a knockout fixture. Interestingly, both Ricky and Adam had hit 8 sixes each in the final against India in 2003 and 2007 World Cup, respectively.

Iyer became the third player after Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to cross the 500-run mark in the ongoing World Cup, and his century ranks as the third-fastest hundred by an Indian batter in the tournament after KL Rahul’s 62-ball century against the Netherlands.

Rahul had surpassed Rohit’s record for the fastest hundred, the hitman had smashed a 63-ball ton against Afghanistan but saw his record surpassed by the wicketkeeper batter on the all-time fastest hundreds list, in the league and knockout games combined.
