'Said Owaisi, Not OBC': Yoga Guru Ramdev After 'I Am Brahmin' Video Goes Viral

Yoga guru Ramdev on Saturday said the statement in his now viral video was not about OBCs but about AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi. He said he did not mean insult the community and his statement had been misheard.

The video was widely shared by different social media handles, which claimed that Ramdev insulted the OBC community as he asserted that he was Brahmin. “I never gave any statement on OBC,” he said responding to a question on the viral video.

He added: “I said ‘Owaisi’ and not ‘OBC’. His (Owaisi’s) predecessors were anti-nationals. I don’t take him seriously.”

The video in question of Ramdev commenting on OBCs could be not be separately verified. But in the undated video, Ramdev is heard saying he is an “Agnihotri Brahmin”.

“My original gotra is Brahma gotra. I am an Agnihotri Brahman. People say babaji is OBC…I am a Vedi Brahmin, Dwivedi Brahmin, Trivedi Brahmin, Chaturvedi Brahmin — I have read four vedas,” he is saying in the clip by a television channel.

After the video went viral, internet users began a trend ‘boycottpatanjali’ and slammed the yoga guru for insulting the backward community. Many also questioned why there was no action against him for the statements.

Even the Congress social media handles hit out at Ramdev. “OBC वाले अपनी ऐसी-तैसी करवाएं।” – lala Ramdev Hey @narendramodi, u call urself an OBC (only during elections..) Why isnt Fraud Ramdev arrested yet for insulting the OBC community?” asked a Congress social media coordinator in a post on X, formerly Twitter.

Owaisi also shared a post slamming Ramdev for the U-turn and using his name as an excuse.
