Team India skipper Rohit Sharma was elated after breaking Chris Gayle’s record of most sixes in international cricket. The swashbuckling opener scripted history on Wednesday during the India vs Afghanistan ODI World Cup clash as he pipped Gayle in the list of players with the most sixes in international cricket.

During his 131-run knock, Rohit smashed 16 fours and five sixes as his knock helped India to register a convincing 8-wicket win over Afghanistan at Arun Jaitley Stadium, New Delhi.

The Indian skipper hit six off Naveen-ul-Haq’s bowling in the 8th over to go past Gayle’s tally of 553 sixes in international cricket. The Hitman has now hit three sixes more than Gayle to make it 556 for him.

The 36-year-old opened up on achieving the massive feat and said a lot of work was put up him over the years to reach the massive milestone.

“When I started playing this game, I never thought I’ll be able to hit sixes, leave alone that many sixes. But I never thought I’d be able to hit sixes like that. Obviously, there’s a lot of work that has gone in over the years. So, I’m quite happy with the work that I’ve done, you know, in so many years,” Rohit said in a video posted by BCCI.

“I want to continue to do what I’ve been doing. So my focus will be on continuing to do what I do. But yeah, it’s a very small happy moment.”

Rohit also expressed his admiration for Gayle and said he has taken a leaf out of his book over the years.

“Universe boss is Universe boss. I’ve taken a leaf out of his book over the years. We’ve seen him as a six-hitting machine. We both wear the same jersey, number 45. So the number 45 has done it, so I’m sure he’s happy about it for us,” he added.

Meanwhile, Gayle also shared a post for Rohit on Wednesday night congratulating him for breaking his massive record.

“Congrats, @ImRo45 – Most Sixes in International cricket. #45 Special,” he tweeted.
