There is no plan to ban Hamas in India but the radicalisation of youth as well as celebration of the October 7 attack on Israel as “victory of Jihad” are signs of worry for security forces, top Indian Intelligence sources told CNN-News18.

CNN-News18 accesses intel note says Hamas attack is seen as victory of Jihad

“The revenge, celebration and contribution to Jihad are all signs of worry for security personnel. Majority of Indian Muslims are unable to differentiate between the Israel-Palestine issue and attack by Hamas on innocent civilians. They see this as a victory of Muslim brotherhood without realising the impact on Palestine right now,” they said.

The sources added that India is “watching the situation carefully” and “Muslim groups are maintaining silence on the issue right now but signs are not very positive”.

The sources said: “For the first time, Palestinian groups have operated deep inside Israel and this is going to leave serious footprints and ideas in the brains of youth and terror groups. The biggest worry for agencies is that the attack in Israel was from outside but in India, if this kind of attack is replicated, it will be from the inside because we have a huge number of radicalised Kashmiri militants already sitting with Pakistani weapons.”

Recently, various mosque prayers were also held for the wellbeing of Palestine but “despite several requests, no one announced that attack by Hamas was against humanity”.

The sources added that the Indian government has no plans to ban Hamas as of now because the terror organisation is not in the UN proscribed list that India usually follows.

“Secondly, to ban Hamas in India, it needs to be banned under UAPA which has its own requirements like funding, recruitment and operations which should be within Indian territory and Hamas has not done any such activity in India,” they said.

However, the recent trend of inviting Hamas leaders for virtual interactions is likely to worry security agencies in the days to come.

Sources said a few years ago, Taliban’s victory over NATO and the United States was also celebrated and that caused huge radicalisation. “People started moving towards ISIS but with timely intervention, agencies managed to avert any major damage. We are in touch with elders of the Muslim community and trying to contain youth with their help. We are also trying to make Indian youth understand that what Hamas carried out was a terror attack.”
