The Nintendo Switch has been out for almost six years now, having launched in 2017, and as we approach the proverbial end of its lifecycle, rumors surrounding the next-generation Switch—potentially called the Nintendo Switch 2—are gaining strength.
A patent filed by Nintendo has recently emerged, potentially offering our first look at what the next-generation Nintendo console could look like. As observed by Gamerant, the patent was filed last year and published this year in October. The patent highlights what looks to be a freshly designed console.
To begin with, the purported console offers a drastically different design compared to the current Switch. Instead of a design based on Joy-Cons, the console in question features a new design with one joystick on the left of the handheld console and four buttons on the right. What remains the same are its shoulder buttons on the top, and notably, the home button seems to have moved to the bottom.
All in all, based on the renders alone, the console certainly appears to be different, with only six buttons and a pressure-sensitive touch screen. However, it remains to be seen if it is indeed the long-rumored Switch 2 or if there’s some twist to it.
With that said, a couple of months ago, during Gamescom, Nintendo was said to have made Switch 2 units available for users “behind closed doors” for select media, where they could play a remastered version of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild with much greater fidelity and other gaming demos. However, it must be noted that there has been no official word from Nintendo’s end so far.
Per VGC, Nintendo Switch 2 is expected to launch sometime next year in 2024, and it may have a portable mode, like the Nintendo Switch—not following in the footsteps of the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles.
