'I'm Not a Big Fan': Irfan Pathan Gives Honest Take on Split Captaincy in Indian Cricket
Irfan Pathan said that he is not a big fans of split-captaincy, however, he suggested that it was necessary on the South Africa tour to manage the workload of the players.

Former all-rounder Irfan Pathan shared his views on the split captaincy in the Indian cricket as the BCCI has named three different captains for the upcoming South Africa tour. With Rohit Sharma taking rest from the white-ball series, Suryakumar Yadav will lead India in the T20I series while KL Rahul has been assigned as the ODI captain.

Rohit has not played a T20I since the last year’s T20 World Cup as all-rounder took the captaincy charge in his absence, however an ankle injury to him forced India to name Surya the T20I skipper.

Pathan said that he is not a big fans of split-captaincy, however, he suggested that it was necessary on the South Africa tour to manage the workload of the players.

“This could be a sign for the future, which I am not a big fan of. There has been talk for a long time about whether we can do split captaincy. It’s true workload management has been done here and that is why you are seeing such big squads and different captains,” Pathan said on Star Sports.

The former all-rounder asserted that that there are chances that India might adopt the split-captaincy for the future also.

“It’s clear that Rohit had to take a break from white-ball cricket, so you are not seeing him there. You are seeing him as the captain for Test cricket. However, you might see these things going forward,” he added.

Pathan, who is not in favour of the split captaincy, feels going forward in future we might see multiple coaches in the side for different formats.

“You might even see different coaches for different formats. I believe it’s better if it doesn’t happen in our culture,” he added.

Meanwhile,  South Africa skipper Temba Bavuma and pace ace Kagiso Rabada have been rested for the white-ball leg of this month’s home series against India with the duo set to return for the two Tests.

The Proteas host India for a full series, which includes three T20Is, as many ODIs and two Tests, beginning with the shortest format on December 10 in Durban.
