India opener Shubman Gill has stayed back in Chennai to remain under the supervision of the medical team. There has been no official word from the Indian camp or the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on details of Gill’s sickness and the management continues to maintain that “he is recovering well and under the constant watch of the medical team”.
From captain Rohit Sharma to coach Rahul Dravid to bowling coach Paras Mhambrey, everyone has been saying that he is “looking better and under watch”.

It is reliably learnt that Gill is staging a speedy recovery and is likely to join the team for the World Cup soon. He wasn’t on that flight to Delhi because the doctor treating him is yet to give the necessary clearances. With regards to his vital signs, everything is looking good and he is already “70-80% recovered”.
“Shubman Gill hasn’t travelled with the team because the doctor treating him is yet to give the necessary clearances. With him being touch and go for the Afghanistan game, it wasn’t an ideal situation to make him travel all the way to Delhi only to make him sit in a different hotel room. It was felt that keeping him in Chennai wouldn’t interrupt the recovery and allow him the required rest,” says a source close to developments.
The date of return is still difficult to say because it still remains to be seen how the body would react after intense physical activity.
“It’s difficult to put a date against the return at this stage. Dengue sucks a lot of energy out of the system, that’s why the doctor is keeping him hydrated with a regular dosage of glucose. The moment he gets clearance, the next step would be to see how the body reacts after intense physical activity,” adds the source.
As CricketNext had reported last week, Gill didn’t fall sick in Chennai and he started showing symptoms of dengue “four-five days before landing in Chennai”. As a result, he not only missed all practice sessions but also the team’s tournament opener vs Australia on Sunday.
“Gill started showing symptoms 4-5 days back (before reaching Chennai). The treatment got underway then only and since then has made good progress and should be back on the park soon,” a source had told this website.
BCCI medical update on Gill: Team India batter Shubman Gill will not be travelling with the team to Delhi on 9th October 2023. The opening batter who missed the team’s first fixture in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 against Australia in Chennai is set to miss the team’s next fixture against Afghanistan in Delhi on the 11th of October. He will stay back in Chennai and will be under the supervision of the medical team.
