'I Had Great Support From Him': Sanju Samson Opens up on His Camaraderie With Rohit Sharma
Sanju Samson opened how Indian skipper Rohit Sharma supported him so far in his career.

Flamboyant wicketkeeper Sanju Samson revealed that Rohit Sharma was one of the first persons who talked to him during his initial days in the Indian Premier League. Samson made his IPL debut in 2013 and was touted as the next big thing in Indian cricket. However, he has yet to live up to that hype as he also failed to make the cut into India’s squad for the recently concluded ODI World Cup. He was also snubbed from the ongoing five-match T20I series against Australia.

Sanju has been out of the Indian team since the Ireland tour earlier this year in August.

The wicketkeeper batter opened how Indian skipper Rohit supported him so far in his career.

“Rohit Sharma was the first or second person who came to me and talked. He told me ‘hey Sanju, wassup. You performed well in the IPL, but hit too many sixes against Mumbai Indians. You bat really well’. I had great support from him,” Samson said in an interaction on Dhanya Varma’s YouTube channel.

Meanwhile, Samson didn’t get consistent chances in the Indian team and his batting order also got shuffled on a regular basis which is one of the reasons why he has failed to cement his place in the set-up.

During the same interaction, Samson was asked about the unlucky tag which has been associated with him for a long time now.

“People call me the unluckiest cricketer, but where I’ve reached currently, it’s much more than what I thought I could,” he added.

Samson’s omission from the Australia T20Is did baffle many and Member of Parliament (MP) Shashi Tharoor has now slammed the decision to not include the Kerala-born in the T20I squad.

Shashi Tharoor, the Congress MP from Thiruvananthapuram, also felt that in the absence of senior players, Sanju Samson should have led the Indian team against Australia in the upcoming series. He further asked why spinner Yuzvendra Chahal was not named in the India squad.

“This is truly inexplicable. Sanju Samson should have not just been selected, he should have led the side in the absence of all the seniors. His captaincy experience with Kerala and Rajasthan Royals is more current than SKY’s. Our selectors need to explain themselves to the cricket-loving public. And why no Yuzvendra Chahal either,” Shashi Tharoor posted on social media platform X (formerly Twitter).
