Shubman Gill may have made his India return after a bout of dengue but the rising star has revealed he’s still not fully fit having lost four kilos.
Gill missed India’s first two matches of the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 but was back for the blockbuster contest against Pakistan in Ahmedabad and has now been part of five matches in a row, steadily getting back to his best in terms of batting form.
“Not full fitness. I am four kilos down from dengue in terms of mass and muscle weight,” Gill responded when Nasser Hussain quizzed him about his health following India’s crushing win over Sri Lanka in Mumbai on Thursday.
Gill scored 16 on vs Pakistan before hitting a half-century against Bangladesh. He followed that with 26 and 9 before belting a confident 92 against Sri Lanka as India racked up 357/8 at the Wankhede Stadium.

“I honestly don’t think it was a 400 wicket. We batted well to get 350. Shreyas (Iyer) was the key today. He batted superbly,” Gill said.
Virat Kohli scored 88 off 94 and it was Iyer’s blistering 56-ball 83 that provided the late push.
Indian pacers then put up another stunning show with Jasprit Bumrah striking with the vert first delivery to get rid of Pathum Nissanka for a golden duck. Mohammed Siraj followed the suit with a wicket off his first delivery as well before Mohammed Shami blazed away with a five-wicket haul.
“The way they were bowling we were anticipating wickets. Siraj is always fired up. They were sensational,” Gill said of Indian bowlers.
With the win, India have become the first team in the competition to qualify for the semi-finals and now their next aim will be to end the round-robin stage at the top spot.
India will return to action after a two-day break to face South Africa at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens.
