Sumit Jamuar, a British-Indian biotech pioneer elected as the chair of US-based climate action non-profit organisation Rainforest Partnership, will take over the baton on January 5, 2024. His election to the position was announced by the group on World Rainforest Day last year.
Jamuar is a chemical engineering graduate from IIT-Delhi and has served as founder-chairman and CEO of Global Gene Corp, CEO of SBICAP(UK) Ltd and managing director at Lloyds Bank in London. A couple of years ago, he appeared on a TED talk with Bollywood superstar Shahrukh Khan. He is also a fellow of Royal Society of Medicine, UK.
Jamuar says he plans to work towards preserving rainforests for future generations in his new role. He says he is inspired by time spent with some of the frontline rainforest communities. The organisation is yet to open in India, but as an Indian, Jamuar plans to serve his country of origin in the coming days.
The Rainforest Partnership protects standing tropical rainforests by working directly with local and indigenous peoples as guardians and economic participants to create sustainable sources of income and community-led conservation projects.
As an impact-driven non-profit organisation founded in 2007, the Rainforest Partnership has a stated mission to achieve audacious goals for rainforests, climate, and the planet. It recently received the Candid Platinum Seal of Transparency, awarded to non-profit organisations that provide a high level of transparency and publicly share their financial and operational information.
Rainforests occupy roughly 6% of Earth’s landmass, yet contribute over 50% of the planet’s biodiversity and absorb 30% of the carbon emissions. The forests and their communities are a tangible bulwark in fight against climate change.
