Swachhhta Hi Seva: Citizens across Assam clean hundreds of public toilets, open urination spots
Safai mitras and swachhata warriors in Assam unite to transform 252 public toilets and 75 open urination spots, marked with yellow stains, in response to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's call for the Swachhhta Hi Seva campaign.

Safai mitras and swachhata warriors across Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) in Assam cleaned hundreds of public toilets and open urination spots commonly marked with yellow spots in a single day. The cleanliness effort was carried out in response to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for Swachhhta Hi Seva campaign.

Safai Mitras and Swachhata warriors across the state worked tirelessly throughout the day to turn these public spaces into clean and accessible facilities for the residents and visitors of Assam.

Ashok Singhal, Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs and Irrigation in Assam made the announcement on ‘X’ formerly known as Twitter.

Singhal stated, “Public urination is a stain on our society, and we will wipe that yellow spot clean.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for Shramdaan is receiving an overwhelming response from the citizens of Assam. People along with safia mitras and Swachhata warriors have shown concern for their environment and have been participating in cleanlinliness drives organised across the state.

Earlier Singhal chaired a meeting with District Commissioners from all districts, chairpersons, CEOs of all Municipal Boards, and other officers to deliberate on the ‘Swachhata Hi Seva’ campaign in the state.

Singhal urged all stakeholders to wholeheartedly implement the program with active participation from citizens to ensure a ‘Swachh Bharat’ in the truest sense.

As a run up to Gandhi Jayanti, the Prime Minister gave a call to citizens for 1 hour of shramdaan for swachhata at 10 am on 1st Oct by all citizens collectively. The mega cleanliness drive calls upon citizens from all walks of life to join in ‘actual cleaning’ activities of public places like market spaces, railway tracks, water bodies, tourist locations, religious places etc.

The cleanliness drive is part of the SwachhataPakhwada- Swachhata Hi Seva2023. It is being observed from 15th Sept till 2nd Oct. Citizens are engaging in various cleanliness activities like restoration of old buildings, cleaning of water bodies, ghats, painting walls, conducting nukkad nataks, and rangoli competitions. Since the launch of the Pakhwada, crores of citizens have joined the Pakhwada fortnight so far.
