Quinton de Kock Sets Multiple Records During World Cup Knock Against Bangladesh In Mumbai
South Africa's Quinton de Kock broke multiple records as he smashed 174 off just 140 balls against Bangladesh.

Records tumbled as South Africa wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock pulled off a sensational knock of 174 off just 140 balls against Bangladesh at the World Cup 2023 on Tuesday. De Kock’s sublime innings helped him to set the record for the highest score for a designated wicketkeeper in the history of World Cup. De Kock surpassed former Aussie wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist’s 149 against Sri Lanka during the World Cup 2007 final. The 30-year-old South Africa international also became the first player from his country to score three centuries in a single edition of World Cup. Prior to the knock against Bangladesh, De Kock had registered scores of 100 and 109 against Sri Lanka and Australia respectively.

Quinton de Kock is now also the highest run scorer of the World Cup 2023. De Kock surpassed India skipper Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to claim the top spot. De Kock has so far notched 407 runs at an average of 81.40 in five World Cup 2023 innings. He even set this World Cup’s highest individual score eclipsing the previous total of Australia’s David Warner. The Aussie southpaw held the record with his knock of 163 against Pakistan.

Quinton de Kock became just the seventh South African batter to have breached the 12,000-run mark in international cricket. De Kock has so far scored 3300 runs in red-ball cricket. In ODIs, De Kock has 6583 runs under his belt. In T20I cricket, he has till now collected 2277 runs in 80 matches.

De Kock’s chances of becoming the second-highest individual scorer for South Africa in World Cups perished after he was dismissed by Hasan Mahmud in the 46th over of the World Cup 2023 fixture. Former cricketer Gary Kirsten still holds the record for the highest individual scorer for South Africa in World Cups. Kirsten had set the record having produced an unbeaten knock of 188 against UAE in the 1996.

De kock’s record-breaking knock guided the Proteas to a mammoth total of 382 against Bangladesh on Tuesday. De Kock, who represents Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League (IPL), smashed 15 boundaries and seven sixes against the Asian outfit at the Wankhede Stadium.

Chasing the challenging total, Bangladesh fell short of the target by 149 runs. Gerald Coetzee emerged as South Africa’s highest wicket-taker with three scalps to his name. Quinton de Kock was, quite rightfully, named Player of the Match for his power-packed batting.
