Netflix has dropped a trailer for its upcoming sci-fi drama, Spaceman, featuring none other than the versatile Adam Sandler in a role that promises to showcase a different side of the comedic actor. Directed by Johan Renck, known for his work on the acclaimed series Chornobyl, the film takes audiences on a thought-provoking journey through space and the depths of the human psyche.
The trailer introduces us to astronaut Jakub, portrayed by Sandler, embarking on a challenging solo mission to the outer reaches of the solar system. The six-month odyssey, however, takes a toll on Jakub’s mental state as loneliness sets in, leading him to question the state of his marriage waiting for him back on Earth.
As Jakub grapples with the isolation of space, a peculiar discovery adds an intriguing layer to the narrative—a mysterious creature within the spaceship. The creature, resembling a giant spider, becomes a confidant for Jakub, offering insights into the unravelling of his personal life. The film blurs the line between reality and the surreal, leaving audiences to wonder whether the creature is a figment of Jakub’s imagination or a tangible presence in space.
Carey Mulligan steps into the role of Lenka, Jakub’s dissatisfied wife back on Earth. Paul Dano lends his voice to Hanuš, the enigmatic spider-like creature. The star-studded cast also includes Kunal Nayyar, Lena Olin and Isabella Rossellini.
Upon encountering Dano’s colossal spider-like being, Jakub exclaims, “I’m losing my mind."
In response, the spider expresses, “I wish to assist you in your emotional distress."
Spaceman draws its inspiration from the 2017 novel Spaceman of Bohemia, penned by the Czech author Jaroslav Kalfař. The film explores themes of isolation, introspection and the fragility of human relationships against the backdrop of the cosmos.
Director Johan Renck expressed his desire to showcase a different facet of Adam Sandler told Netflix’s TUDUM, emphasising the actor’s intelligence and depth beyond his well-known comedic persona. Renck commended Sandler’s commitment to the physically demanding role, highlighting the discomfort of performing in harnesses and suspended body weight. The director believes Sandler’s ability to push through such challenges enhances the authenticity of his performance.
Spaceman is set to hit theatres for a limited run on February 23 before landing on Netflix on March 1. Sandler, a regular collaborator with Netflix, has previously delighted audiences with films like You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah, Murder Mystery 2 and Leo.
Produced by a team including Channing Tatum, Peter Kiernan, Reid Carolin, Michael Parets, Lia Buman, Tim Headington, and Max Silva, Spaceman is all set to be a visually stunning and emotionally resonant addition to Netflix’s diverse lineup.
