Actor Joaquin Phoenix is waging an all-out war with his battalion in the second trailer of Napoleon, released on Wednesday, October 18. Against the backdrop of a blood bath and massive battle shots, Joaquin takes the center frame leading his men to trap the enemy forces from the very first frame. Launching the attack on an icy plain, the tyrant blocks all sources of his rivals’ retreat by showing canons thereby submerging the army into chilly water. “I’m not built like other men," says Joaquin’s Napoleon in a sharp tone just moments before annihilating enemies on another battlefield. What follows is the story of his rise to power in France in the 1790s.
“Those in power only see me as a brute unfit for higher office. But I follow in the footsteps of Alexander the Great and Caesar," the savage leader makes clear his intentions. The story that runs on high-octane action also explores Napoleon’s relationship with his wife Josephine. The brute warrior’s other half is played by actress Vanessa Kirby and their chemistry promises to be a crucial dynamic of the film. Joaquin’s Napoleon expresses disdain over the thought of being second in command. And the aftermath is his seizing power over the French territory. “I will win by fire. I am destined for greatness," he laments as ballistic battle drums play in the background. A scene also sees Napoleon crowning himself the emperor after which begins his long years of diplomatic and military domination over other nations including Great Britain.
From the looks of the trailer, the movie promises to be an action-packed amalgamation of Napoleon’s rise backed by naval warfare, venture into the pyramids, and ballistic killing spree. Watch the latest Napoleon trailer here:
Based on a true story, the upcoming movie is helmed and bankrolled by Ridley Scott with a feature of Tahar Rahim in a supporting role. Napoleon will be released in UK theatres on November 22 before it begins streaming on Apple TV+ at a later date.
Notably, the movie marks Joaquin Phoenix’s second massive appearance on the silver screen this year, following the premiere of the horror epic Beau Is Afraid in April.
