Women's Day special: Celebrities speak up about gender pay gap in Bollywood
It is a fact that even the top actresses don't make as much as the actors.

They have interesting ideas. They have the right potential. They know what it means to slog. They are achievers. Yet they don't earn as much as their male counterparts. No matter how hard we try to evade the topic, but the reality is that Indian showbiz industry is rife with sexism. It is a fact that even the top actresses don't make as much as the actors. No wonder many are pissed. Here's what known faces from the film fraternity have say:

Aditi Rao Hydari: I don't really understand why we are paid less than the male actors because we put equal efforts and recent past has shown that actresses can deliver a hit film. We deserve better pay, equal to what actors get.

Advaita Kala: Gender inequality isn't specifically about remuneration. However, since it is completely contractual, nobody has access to first-hand information. But from what I have heard, actors do get more. This is industry practise. This comes from the fact that female centric films dont earn enough at the Box office. It is 'the hero who gets Box office numbers. It would be nice to see actresses getting a certain per cent of the money made at the box office too.

Jaya Prada: Bollywood looks only at the Box Office numbers. If the film earns money, it is usually because of the hero and the director. It is about Salman and Shah Rukh Khan. But things have changed a lot for heroines now, though not completely. An actress can demand a better remuneration. Unlike the bygone era, characters don't matter now. I'm lucky to say that good characters and good films. But yes, compared to actors we didn't get much.
