Hema Malini and Dharmendra’s love story was straight out of a Bollywood script – full of drama, romance, and, of course, a twist. Hema Malini, the undisputed ‘Dream Girl’ of Bollywood, and Dharmendra, the ultimate He-man, fell madly in love while shooting for Tum Haseen Main Jawan. But there was one big hurdle – Dharmendra was already married to Prakash Kaur.
Smitten by Hema Malini, Dharmendra wasn’t about to let his first marriage stand in the way of their love story. Since his wife refused to grant a divorce, they took a bold step – converting to Islam to tie the knot. Dharmendra married his first wife, Prakash Kaur, in 1954 at 19. They have four children: sons Sunny and Bobby Deol and daughters Vijeta and Ajieta. With Hema Malini, he has two daughters – Esha and Ahana Deol.
For years, fans speculated about the nature of Hema Malini’s relationship with Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol. This curiosity has often fueled gossip and rumours of trouble in the family. However, in 2017, during the launch of her biography Hema Malini: Beyond the Dream Girl, written by Ram Kamal Mukherjee and unveiled by Deepika Padukone on the veteran actress’ 69th birthday, Hema Malini set the record straight.
Hema Malini candidly addressed her relationship with Sunny Deol, revealing that they share a “beautiful” bond. She went on to recall how, after her 2015 accident, Sunny was the first person to visit her at home, a gesture that she thought spoke volumes about their mutual respect and care for each other. “Everyone wonders what kind of a relationship we (Sunny and I) are having. It is very beautiful and cordial. Whenever it is necessary, he (Sunny) is always there, along with Dharamji, especially when this accident happened,” Hema Malini had said.
Recalling how he was concerned about her health, Hema Malini said, “He [Sunny] was the first person to come and see me at home and he saw that the right doctor is there for the stitches that were done on my face. I was really taken aback to see him showing so much interest. That shows what kind of a relationship we are having.”
Dharmendra and Hema Malini’s private nikah in 1980 had the industry buzzing, and they later had an Iyengar-style wedding to honour Hema’s roots.
