Dhoom exploded onto the scene in 2004, giving Bollywood a game-changing action thriller. The film, now considered a cult classic, brought the allure of the “likable bad guy” to the forefront, spiced up with sleek superbikes and heart-pounding heists. The movie’s massive success paved the way for a sequel starring Aishwarya Rai and Hrithik Roshan, which turned into yet another blockbuster. But what really had tongues wagging? The sizzling lip-lock between Hrithik and Aishwarya.
The actress, who had previously admitted to feeling ‘not very comfortable’ with such scenes, in a chat with Filmfare in 2016, had said that the kiss wasn’t shocking. She had said, “We came to Dhoom 10 years into my career, by which point a kiss had become a familiar sight. So, with the changing times, you consider what could be shocking or not with a sense of responsibility. A social and visual comfort comes with the changing times. You gauge that keeping your comfort space in mind. When I did the kiss in Dhoom, we decided to treat it in a scene. There’s a dialogue in the kiss. It’s not like there’s a crescendo music and just a kiss. Hrithik and I don’t run into each other’s arms.”
Back in 2012, during an interview with the Daily Mail, Aishwarya Rai had gone candid about Dhoom 2. She had revealed how the kiss scene led to ‘multiple notices’ to her. The actress had shared, “I did it once prominently in the movie Dhoom and it was so topical, and you’ll be surprised, I mean I actually got a couple of notices, legal notices, from some people in the country turning around and saying “You are iconic, you’re an example to our girls you have led your life in such an exemplary manner, they’re not comfortable with you doing this on screen so why did you?”
