This article contains spoilers for all nine episodes of WandaVision.
It’s over, the glorious season of Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase 4 show WandaVision is officially over. The show, written by Jac Schaeffer and directed by Matt Shafman, saw Avenger Wanda Maximoff living a fantasy with her partner Vision through classic sitcoms of different eras.
Throughout nine entertaining episodes we saw Wanda creating a bubble around the city of Westview in New Jersey and altering her reality within it. We saw this reality slowly crumble when Vision started to notice the glitches in it. We then got to know that a powerful witch Agatha Harkness was the reason behind all the nuisance in Wanda’s neighbourhood.
In the penultimate episode we saw Agatha taking Wanda back to different times in her life and answer questions about the Hex and how she created it. We also found out, for the first time in MCU, that Wanda was the Scarlet Witch.
The ninth and final episode dropped on Friday. With over 45 minutes of run-time, it was the longest episode in the series. We saw two epic fights that happened at the same time. Wanda faced-off with Agatha Harkness, who wanted Wanda’s powers. She made a deal with her to let Wanda continue living her life in a literal bubble, or watch her kids and Vision disappear again, in order to protect the Westview residents. On the other hand, the defence agency SWORD had revived the old body of the Avenger Vision, who was killed by Thanos. Vision’s memories were kept from him and he was instructed to destroy both Wanda and the Vision who existed in the Hex. This White Vision has been stripped off of empathy and manipulated into being a weapon of destruction.
However, after an exciting and Marvel-esque fight sequence, Vision explains to White Vision that he isn’t the one he is seeking to destroy. With the analogy of the Ship of Theseus in Metaphysics, Vision explains to his nemesis that even though he doesn’t have the Mind Stone and any memory associated with his previous life, he still is Vision. He then helps him retain his old memories.
We don’t know what happens to Vision after that. But we find out that Monica has been held captive by the Fake Pietro. We find out that it is actually Ralph Bohner, who Agatha as Agness had referred to as her husband. This quashed the expectations of the Marvel fans, who wanted a Multiverse story-line where Wanda or Agness somehow conjured the X-Men version of Quicksilver to the MCU Earth.
We then see Wanda opening the Hex to let the original people of Westview out, after they tell her that she is torturing them. This is when SWORD head Tyler Hayward takes his arsenal to eliminate Wanda and her family. In this sequence we see Billy and Tommy use their superpowers to stop the military. Hayward actually tries to shoot and kill Billy and Tommy, but Monica, who has powers now, absorbs the bullets into her body. While trying to escape, Darcy crashes Hayward’s jeep with her circus van and traps him.
With the final face-off between Agatha and Wanda, we realise Wanda utilise her full potential as the Scarlet Witch. After overpowering Agatha with her own lesson in spells, Wanda traps her in WestView, forever in her role as Agness the nosy neighbour.
In a heartbreaking sequence, we see Wanda saying good-bye to her kids and Vision, after she removes the Hex and restores normalcy to Westview. However, in typical MCU style, WandaVision leaves us with exciting mid-credit and post-credit scenes. In the mid-credit scene, we see a Skrull impersonating her colleague, telling her that an ‘old friend of her mother’ wants to meet her in space. In the shocking post-credit scene, we see Wanda living in a quiet cabin in the mountains. But in another room, Scarlet Witch is reading the ‘Darkhold,’ the book of the damned witches. She hears Billy and Tommy call out her name. This is where the episode ends.
Now what does the series finale mean for the future of MCU. As Marvel enthusiasts we know that the Phase 4 is all about new Avengers, and more characters from the comics. This episode in itself can be considered as a set-up for different story-lines and characters.
First and foremost, we have Captain Monica Rambeau, the SWORD agent and daughter of pilot Captain Maria Rambeau. We also know that Monica will join Carol Danvers in Captain Marvel 2. The powers she got while entering Wanda’s Hex has made her be able to absorb high amounts of energy. That way, she can shield herself from attacks, no matter how strong. The cameo made by a Skrull in the mid-credits scene is a direct nod to Captain Marvel 2. However, it can also be a hint for a future ‘Secret Invasion’ project. This, we are predicting because Skrulls appeared in the end-credit scene of Spider-Man: Far From Home as well. Since Peter Parker doesn’t have a direct link to Skrulls, there must be more going on than Captain Marvel 2.
On the other hand, we saw Wanda’s twins Billy and Tommy fight alongside their parents. In the Marvel Comics, Billy and Tommy become the Young Avengers Wiccan and Speed. EVen though they disappeared after the Hex was lifted Wanda hears their screams for help in the end-credit scenes. This means that they might not be permanently gone. Even in the comics, the twins were killed by Mephisto but they appeared again as Wiccan and Speed. Marvel is also slowly assembling their Young Avengers — Monica Rambeau to Miss Marvel in Captain Marvel 2, Kate Bishop in Hawkeye and Cassie Lang or Stature in Ant Man 3 — it is a matter of time before we see Billy and Tommy again.
Lastly, we know that Wanda will appear in Doctor Strange: Multiverse of Madness. Marvel boss Kevin Feige also revealed that Doctor Strange 2 will connect to Spider-Man: No Way Home. This gets set-up in the finale episode of WandaVision. Wanda reading the ‘Darkhold’ means she will unleash the full power of the Scarlet Witch. The glowing red eyes and the anger on Scarlet Witch’s face is in tune with the concept of Doctor Strange 2. Wanda will or has unconsciously tapped into the multiverse. Doctor Strange will either help clean up the mess or will actually fight her. This might be hinted in the last episode where Agatha Harkness says that the Scarlet Witch has a greater power than the Sorcerer Supreme.
Lastly, even though it looks like Marvel messed with the fans by casting Evan Peters as a Pietro impostor, this is too big a coincidence. The Disney-Fox merger is very real. The fact that Deadpool 3 will happen in the MCU is official. There is no doubt that the X-Men or at least some of them will appear in the MCU films, it is just a matter of time. So there is no way we are going to believe that Marvel studios cast Evan Peters for a small role and hasn’t already established X-Men in the MCU. That is not how the studio works.
The next show in line is The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Even though that show will follow Captain America’s legacy, we are excited to see if there are bits and pieces of reference to WandaVision, or the world after that.
