Snehil Dixit Mehra, who worked as a writer and additional director on Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s debut streaming series Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar, shared her thoughts on her experiences with the show. She also recalled an incident involving cast member Taha Shah Badussha, who portrayed the ill-fated nawab Tajdar in the series, where they had a difference of opinion regarding a crucial scene.
Snehil, in a chat with Bollywood Life, said, “There is one scene jahaan Taha Shah ne mujhe tang kiya tha (annoyed me). He was not listening to me. In one particular scene I wanted him to have tears in his eyes and he’d say, ‘Aadmi thodi rote hai (men don’t cry)’. And I was like, ‘This boy has to cry, only then the audience will cry, please…’ So, we had to do a lot of retakes there. Taha is very sweet, he then said, ‘Chal tu behen hai, tere liye karta hoon (You’re like a sister, I’d do it for you)’.”
Snehil, a first-time director, found working with industry veterans like Farida Jalal and acclaimed cinematographers Sudeep Chatterjee and Mahesh Limaye overwhelming. She mentioned that they all made her feel comfortable on set.
She explained, “There were many scenes which needed a lot of retakes because I was also directing for the first time. There were times when I was also feeling nervous, when there is someone like Farida Jalal, who has so much experience behind her, we’ve grown up watching her, so how do you tell her what to do? I used to feel that kind of nervousness a lot as a first time director.”
Meanwhile, Taha Shah Badussha’s appearance at the Cannes Film Festival 2024 grabbed the attention of many. While some cheered for him, others questioned what took him there. In fact, a report claimed that he was ‘seen hovering uncertainly’ on the red carpet and even signaling to ‘a photographer to click him’ and that this makes for a ‘fatally flawed’ move. For the unversed, Taha attributed his Cannes debut outing to the trailer and poster launch of his film Paro at the Bharat Pavilion.
In an exclusive chat with News18 Showsha, Taha addressed this chatter on the internet as ‘bizarre’. Reacting to the report, he said, “I don’t get the time to go on social media and check things out but I’ve so many groups and sometimes they send me screenshots. Whenever I get the time, I bounce through them. Nobody said these things about me earlier. I did some jugaad and went to IFFI last year but nobody spoke about it. What about that? What about the time when I had nothing [going on for me]?”
