Ryan Reynolds Admits He Was Nervous Asking Madonna To License Like A Prayer For Deadpool & Wolverine
Ryan Reynolds recalled his first meeting with Madonna where he was initially nervous to approach the Grammy winner to feature her hit song in Deadpool & Wolverine.

The release of Deadpool & Wolverine is almost here and fans are eagerly waiting to uncover all the secrets. While early spoiler free reviews are already circulating online, the film’s tracklist is catching everyone’s attention. Among the exciting tracks like Slash by Stray Kids and NSYNC’s Bye Bye Bye, the surprising addition of Madonna’s classic hit, Like A Prayer, stands out. Ahead of the film’s release on July 26, Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman recently discussed the song on Good Morning America.

While Hugh wasn’t invited at the meeting with the iconic singer, Ryan, on the other hand, revealed he was initially nervous to approach Madonna to feature her hit song. Interestingly, ever since wrapping the last film, he had hoped to include Like A Prayer in the upcoming sequel.

The actor explained, “That was a once in a lifetime opportunity to talk to Madonna. I mean she doesn’t license songs particularly Like A Prayer like that and I was so nervous because partly it’s Madonna and I didn’t know what to do. I even asked the person who was organizing, ‘Do I say Madonna? Do I bow? Is blinking insulting? Tell me what to do here as I go in? This song had been in my head for six years since we just finished Deadpool 2. I’ve been thinking about this song for a specific sequence that it appears in this movie. So I went in, just on my back foot I was so nervous that it would be a no, but Madonna was gracious."

“Not only gracious but she gave us an idea or a thought that she had musically with the piece in the movie that ended up being like a game changer. It was pretty damn and she at one point sang back a little chorus of Like A Prayer. Sean is with me and looking at him I’m like, ‘Are you not realizing she is singing the song right now to your face’," Ryan Reynolds added.

In a separate interview with Andy Cohen on SiriusXM, Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy shared details about getting Madonna’s permission to use her song in the movie. He explained that the team visited the Grammy winner’s home to show her the scene where her song, Like A Prayer would be featured. The filmmaker described the experience as if they were “meeting royalty" and Madonna also gave them helpful advice on how to use her track. Following her suggestions, they quickly arranged a new recording session within 48 hours to make some adjustments. According to Levy, Madonna’s input greatly improved the scene, making it even better.

Other than Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movie also stars Emma Corrin, Matthew Macfadyen, Morena Baccarin, Leslie Uggams, Karan Soni, Stefan Kapicic, Aaron Stanford, Brianna Hildebrand, Tyler Mane, Rob Delaney, Lewis Tan, Jason Flemyng, Kelly Hu and Ray Park.
