Rajkummar Rao Remembers Shah Rukh Khan's Advice on Buying a Luxurious Home: 'Aukaat Se Zyaada Lena'

Bollywood actor Rajkummar Rao, getting ready for his new movie Srikanth, recently shared some advice he got from Shah Rukh Khan. Shah Rukh told him to buy a house that’s a bit expensive, so he’d feel motivated to work harder. Rajkummar said in an interview with Mashable that Shah Rukh once told him, that when buying a house, stretch your budget a bit.

The actor said, “Shah Rukh sir had taught me one thing ‘Beta kabhi bhi ghar lega na, toh aukaat se thoda zyaada lena. Kyunki phir na, upar wala bhi dekhta hai aur tu khud bhi zyada mehnat karega (Son, whenever you buy a house, buy one a little beyond your means. That way, you’ll work harder because you’d want to earn it).’ I found this very fascinating.” He added, “Having a home in the city is of course a dream and we have built it lovingly, me and Patralekhaa.”

SRK once said that Mannat was too expensive for him. He mentioned at the launch of Gauri Khan’s book My Life In Design, “When we bought Mannat, it was way beyond our means, and once we were done buying the house, we didn’t have money to decorate it. We hired a designer, only to realise we couldn’t afford him.” In the March 2013 issue of Notch Magazine, designer-turned-producer Shabinaa Khan had penned a heartfelt essay recalling her experiences with Shah Rukh Khan and Gauri Khan. Titled The SRK Story, the article delved into SRK’s early days in Bollywood and his life with wifey dearest Gauri Khan after they relocated to Mumbai. She revealed that After Gauri joined Shah Rukh in Mumbai, they lived in one of the bedrooms in Aziz Mirza’s house for a few weeks. Then they rented a one-bedroom apartment in Mount Mary. She had written, “Shah Rukh got his dream bungalow Mannat during Gauri’s birthday – and Adi decided to show the first copy of his film (DDLJ). That was the day Shah Rukh hosted all of us on the dilapidated terrace of the house with no lights, just one bulb, biryani served on thermocol plates and disposable glasses. He was just too excited to show us his latest acquisition.”

Meanwhile, Rajkummar Rao’s biographical drama Srikanth is all set to release in theatres on May 10. The film also stars Jyothika, Alaya F and Sharad Kelkar.
