Playback Singers Don't Get Their Due, Says Kanika Kapoor
In an interaction with News18.com, Kanika Kapoor shared that singers, especially playback singers, fail to get their due in the film industry.

With successful songs like Jugni Ji, Lovely, Kamlee, Chitiyan kaliyaan, Baby Doll and Da Da Dasse, singer Kanika Kapoor has spanned her music graph across several genres. But despite the versatility of singers, Bollywood largely remains biased towards the actors.

In an interaction with News18.com, Kapoor shared that singers, especially playback singers, fail to get their due in the film industry. “Playback singers don’t get their due because I feel it’s more about the actors and the actresses than singers. In the west, it’s more about the singers. But it’s very difficult here, in India," she said.

Not just the battle between actors and singers, one might feel that there’s also an existence of gender disparity in the music industry itself. But Kapoor believes that female singers are equally a part of the music landscape now as a lot has changed in the recent past “The demand and requirement of good singers is always there and so the same for male and female singers. We don’t have a long way to go. We are almost there."

A trend that has spread like a wildfire in Bollywood and has caught the fancy of several big filmmakers too is of recreating old Hindi classics with certain new twists. To this, Kapoor admitted that she has her own reservations of remaking old songs.

“Yes, there has been a rise in the recreations and remixes. I have my reservations about remaking old songs, and this is because I feel that it is very difficult to do justice to a remake. A remake will always be a classic hit number, and it’s a huge responsibility on the singer’s part to recreate that same magic. Hence, one should be very careful when singing for a remake," she added.

When asked about the most challenging thing for a singer in addition to croon remakes of classic hits is to shoot, sing and record at the same time. “Well, I was facing the camera for the first time, as a judge on the reality show Om Shanti Om (OSO). It was an amazing experience but challenging to shoot, sing, and record at the same time, which is pretty much what I have been doing so far."

The singer, who has recently crooned her chartbusters Lovely and Marjaani for the project T-Series MixTape Punjabi, feels that such programs bring music closer to the listeners and also enhance the music reach. “With the digital platform becoming so big, such programmes definitely provide a boost and the reach does increase."

“The audience has heard one version of a song when it was a part of the movie. Now the same people get to enjoy the same song, but in a new avatar and form. Music director Abhijit Vaghani has played with both the songs very well by mixing one into another effortlessly, creating somewhat a new version, making it just in time for the party season," she said.
