The untold love story of legendary actor Meena Kumari and filmmaker Kamal Amrohi is set to come to the big screen. Directed by Siddharth P Malhotra, the film, titled Kamal Aur Meena, will explore the couple’s timeless journey, delving into their personal lives as well. Officially announced as a joint project by Saregama and Bilal Amrohi, Kamal Amrohi and Meena Kumari’s grandson, the news has garnered attention. Actor Sanjay Dutt extended his heartfelt wishes to Bilal and his wife, Saachi Kumar Amrohi, following the announcement.
Sharing the announcement teaser on his Instagram handle, Dutt wrote, “Dear Saachi and Bilal, all the best for your new venture. May it be a successful one! Love always, from Sanjay Mamu. It’s a must-watch.”

For those unaware, Saachi Kumar Amrohi is the daughter of Namrata Dutt, sister of the Bollywood actor. Both Saachi and Bilal have joined the project as producers, states a Pinkvilla report.
Speaking about the video, it begins with a series of vintage pictures of the late actor along with some letters in Urdu. What follows are the voices of Meena and Kamal in the background as they call out to each other with some endearing nicknames. “A filmmaker, A Muse, Their star crossed love story, A dream that refused to die, A love that went beyond the grave,” read the on-screen captions amid the music of Chalte Chalte from Pakeezah.

While the Maharaj director takes on the project, it also involves a star-studded lineup of talents like AR Rahman, Irshad Kamil, Bhavani Iyer, and Kausar Munir.
Speaking to Zoom, Siddharth P Malhotra revealed that the entire Amrohi family will be a part of the project. “They are producing it. The casting will be done in November,” he added. Bilal Amrohi also shared his views and said that he wishes to show their “heart-wrenching” story to the world. “Over 500 handwritten letters exchanged between my grandparents Kamal Sahaab and Meenaji, as well as personal journals detailing their lives together,” he said, as quoted by Hindustan Times.
The film will go on the floors in 2025 and is expected to be released in 2026, said trade analyst Taran Adarsh. Meanwhile, details about the casting have been kept under wraps.
