Featuring Demi Moore in the lead role alongside Margaret Qualley and Dennis Quaid, Coralie Fargeat’s horror thriller film The Substance received a rousing standing ovation that lasted over 10 minutes at the 77th Cannes Film Festival on Sunday, May 19. The event turned out to be very special for the Hollywood star, as she not only marked her Cannes debut this year but also received a lot of appreciation for the film. Said to be a body transformation horror, The Substance is focused on a new product that promises to transform people into their best versions, however, with a twist.
While the premiere screening started a bit late, the audiences were left amazed by the time the end credits rolled around, leaving Moore, Qualley and Fargeat overjoyed. Videos on the internet show the audience giving a 13-minute-long standing ovation to the film amid loud claps and applause, according to a Deadline report.

Notably, The Substance is Demi Moore’s first film at the coveted film festival and also marks the French director’s debut.
Prior to her Cannes appearance, Moore spoke about her journey in Hollywood as an aged actress and said, “You just show up and you face what’s in front of you to the best of your ability. I think what’s most important is how you hold yourself not how the world is holding you… which is exactly what The Substance is about – this male perspective of the idealized woman, that we as women have bought into… and I think we are changing. We are living the change right now.”
The actress also shared a glimpse of the film on her Instagram ahead of its premiere and wrote, “First look at THE SUBSTANCE. Premiering tonight at @festivaldecannes. Can’t wait!.”
